Artist Statement

With my work as a graphic designer and photographer, I challenge myself to say as much as I can with as little as possible. I achieve this through simple and detail-oriented designs that are meant to create an ease of communication with the viewer. To me, simplicity means the removal of all unnecessary components, allowing the focus of a piece to be on the most important element. This is evidenced in the piece PlumCrazy Logo Design through a geometric design and clear imagery. Details are the most important part of my designs. They carry the power to either elevate the design and successfully translate a message, or they can ruin the balance and fall short of the design’s intended purpose.

My particular graphic design print interests are book covers, posters, and branding materials. Through book design, I am able to convince a reader as to why they should read a book in the first place. People really do judge a book by its cover, and so the design is all the more important. Posters are a traditional form of mass communication, and they allow me as a graphic designer to deliver a message to a wide variety of people from numerous backgrounds, pushing me to be a more well-rounded and better informed designer. Branding design is one of my favorite forms of graphic design because of its versatility as well as the opportunity it provides me to help others define who they are as a brand and a company. Working with clients to create their unique identity introduces so many amazing connections and providing them with the confidence to stand out is extremely rewarding work.

I see the process of stripping away parts of a design until all that is left is the bare necessities like a game. And because of that, the process is just as important as the end result. This is evident in my photography work. The pieces Light 1-4 and Horizontal 1-4 show abstract photographs that have an emphasis on symmetry, and through these works I was able to dive into the process until all that existed was the subject matter. This is my way of removing from my work all distractions and anxieties that I face throughout the day. By surrounding myself with the work, to the point where it becomes unrecognizable, all other matters melt away. My hope with these series of photographs is to give the viewer an escape from daily life and the troubles they may face. Rather giving them something to focus all of their energy and attention on, allowing them to get lost in the patterns and symmetry, almost like hypnosis.

The discipline of removing distractions and abstracting the subject matter by focusing on minute details is apparent in both my photography and my graphic design work. In graphic design it shows itself slightly differently, where I focus on the flat color of an image or the simple typography of a composition to avoid over-complicating the design and instead favoring elements that are straightforward and yet still packed with meaning.

With these skills and passions, I hope to be a designer who is professional, well-rounded, and organized, as well as fun, energetic, and personable to my clients. If I can’t make connections through my work, then I don’t believe it to be worth making.
